Jennifer Speed, LPC (Alexandria Office)
Jennifer Speed is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia. She also maintains professional licensure in Maryland. Additionally, Ms. Speed is a board approved clinical supervisor in the state of Maryland. She graduated from the University of Denver in 2009 with a Masters’ degree in Forensic Psychology and obtained her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Mount St. Mary’s University in 2007.
Ms. Speed previously provided therapeutic services in a variety of settings including non-profit community mental health centers and correctional facilities. She is experienced in providing therapeutic services to couples, children, adolescents, families, and adults presenting with a wide range of mental health and behavioral disorders. Ms. Speed utilizes a strength-based, CBT approach geared toward helping individuals and families build on the positive attributes they already possess in order to facilitate change.
Throughout Ms. Speed’s therapeutic experience working with couples and families, she has come to understand how becoming a parent can cause significant strain on a couple’s relationship. It is an incredible milestone in life that is also difficult to navigate and achieve balance. Whether you are new parents struggling to adjust from your dyad to a triad (or more!) or are trying to set boundaries with adult children living in your home, addressing parenting dynamics, communication, and skills are essential to improving and maintaining the health of your relationship as a couple.
Additionally, there are unique challenges when a couple is co-parenting after their relationship ends. Ms. Speed believes special care must be taken to ensure children are able to maintain as much consistency as possible regardless of which parent is caring for them at any given time. Therapy for parents who are trying to co-parent after divorce or separation may be necessary to help them mitigate distress for their children.
Ms. Speed also offers couples services for people seeking pre-marital counseling, trying to improve trust and communication, and maintaining relationship health for those couples who are separated due to career requirements, such as military deployment.”
